Antimicrobial peptides are attracting attention in the pharmaceutical and food industries due to their excellent antibacterial activity and microbial resistance. In this study, we have developed nanoengineered polypeptides synthesized by N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of α-amino acid N-carboxyanhydrides (NCAs). α-polylysines were firstly prepared to produce nano-engineered polyarginine. The architectures of nanoengineered polypeptides such as linear, hinged, and star can be controlled simply by changing the type of amine initiator. The copolypeptides are also prepared by adjusting the type of NCAs. All the synthesized polypeptide structures were confirmed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. The optical density value of the bacterial suspension was measured at a wavelength of 600 nm using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The Nanoengineered polyarginine showed excellent antibacterial activity. |
