The photoalignment effect was first described in 1988 with the discovery of the reversible alignment control of nematic LCs by the photoisomerization of azobenzene on a substrate surface. Since then, photoalignment methods have recently become of practical importance in industry. Non-contact and high-resolution photoalignment processes have considerable advantages when compared with the conventional rubbing processes. Photoalignment technology provides effective control of basic anchoring parameters: easy orientation axis, pretilt angle and anchoring energy. Besides this, the photoalignment technique promises new advanced applications of liquid crystals in telecommunications and organic electronics, in which the use of rubbing technique is limited. In this talk, we will cover the status of the recent developments in the field of photoalignment as well as the fundamentals of photoalignment system based on polymer materials. |
