Extremely water repellent surfaces with near-zero sliding angle have been obtained with a facile single-step sol-gel strategy via co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) in basic media with efficient self-cleaning property. The molar ratio of EtOH, H2O, TEOS and NH4OH was kept constant at 8∶0.045∶3∶2.8 and the molar ratio of HDTMS/TEOS (M) was varied from 0 to 0.5. Different amount of as-synthesized sol (100, 200, 300 µL) was diluted with EtOH and after sonication (tip and bath), it was spray-coated on PET films. By increasing the M, WCA increased while transparency showed a decrease. When M reached 0.125, the water droplet rolled off and pinned to the edges of the film in case of bath-sonicated sol (200 and 300 µL sol). Overall, this study reports the changed in WCA, transmittance and morphology regarding the change in HDTMS/TEOS molar ratio to obtain a superhydrophobic surface with near-zero sliding angle and self-cleaning properties. |
