The poly(ether ether ketone) with pendant carboxylic acid groups was directly synthesized to prepare polymer electrolyte membranes for fuel cell. The carboxylic acid groups provided the opportunity to control the degree of sulfonation and the distribution of the sulfonic acid groups within the polymer. It also can be used to prepare the cross-linkable sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membranes. The sPEEK with high degree of sulfonation usually exhibits high proton conductivity. However, the mechanical properties of sPEEK is decreased because of extreme swelling in water. Cross-linking is a simple and efficient way to enhance mechanical strength, and also limit the methanol diffusion and water uptake. The proton conductivity, water uptake, methanol permeability and thermal stability were investigated in order to evaluate the properties of the cross-linked sulfonated polymer membranes for fuel cell applications. |
