Cellulose-graft-poly(l-lactide) micelle for drug delivery vehicle: Effect of degree of substitution on the micelle stability and drug release behavior |

A biodegradable water-soluble cellulose-graft-poly(l-lactide)(cellulose-g-PLLA) with various degree of substitution was synthesized in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride using stannous octanoate as an initiator. The characterization of the cellulose-g-PLLA was measured by 1H-NMR, GPC and contact angle meter. The cellulose-g-PLLA could self-assemble into micelles in water with the hydrophobic PLLA segments at the cores of micelles and the hydrophilic cellulose segments at the outer shells. The hydrodynamic diameters of cellulose-g-PLLA micelle had a range from 100 to 200nm. Prednisone acetate, a water insoluble anti-inflammation drug, was chosen as a model drug to investigate the utilization of micelles as a delivery carrier. The cellulose-g-PLLA micelle with low degree of graft substitution had higher micelle stability and sustained drug-release behavior from the micelles. |
