Drug Release Behaviors of Heparin-Based Nanoparticles for Tumor-Targeted Drug Delivery |

A novel heparin-based copolymer heparin-poly(β-benzyl-L-aspartate) (HP) was synthesized as anticancer drug carrier. In order to develop an active tumor-targeted drug delivery system, folate ligands were introduced onto heparin-based nanoparticle. The heparin-based copolymers were found to have low anticoagulant activity, which was suggested to be safe drug carriers without the risk of inducing hemorrhage. The encapsulation of Paclitaxel (PTX) in polymeric micelles composed of heparin-based copolymers was investigated in this study. The drug loading content, encapsulation efficiency and in vitro drug release profile were characterized. The size of PTX-loaded micelles was in the range of 150-200 nm at high drug loading efficiency, which indicated the potential capacity for targeting solid tumor tissues passively by the Enhanced Permeability and Retention (EPR) effect. These findings showed that the HP and FHP copolymers could be useful as hydrophobic anticancer drug carriers. |
