Self-healing protective coating materials containing vegetable oil microcapsule for application to cementitious composites |

Self-healing protective coating materials have the ability of autonomic self-healing of region damaged by microcracking in the coatings themselves or substrate materials such as metals or concrete. We have developed self-healing protective coating using a linseed oil as healing agent. Linseed oil reacts in the presence of oxygen in the air. Reaction conversion is characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Linseed oil-containing microcapsules are characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microcapsules were blended into commercial coating materials to obtain a self-healing coating. It was demonstrated by water permeability test and depth of neutralization test that the scratched region was repaired. |
