Recently, much attention has been paid to polylactide or poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as an environmentally friendly, biocompatible, and biodegradable thermoplastic polymer. Although PLA exhibits excellent transparancy, compostibility, thermal and mechanical properties, the weakness in thermal resistance, toughness and dimensional stability limit its application. To overcome these limitations, in this study, we synthesized PLA/POSS hybrids with various POSS contents by ring-opening polymerization of 3-hydroxypropylheptaisobutyl-POSS as an initiator and L-lactide monomer. The molecular weight and chemical structures of PLA/POSS hybrids synthesized were characterized using solution viscometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Their optical clarity, thermal property, thermal resistance, and mechanical properties were also investigated by using optical microscopy, DSC, TGA, and UTM, respectively. |
