Ion Mobility Spectrometry is an analytical technique to separate molecular ions according to the difference of their mobility in a buffer gas, i.e. difference in collision cross-section of the ions. When combined with mass spectrometry, it allows two-dimensional separation according to both size and mass of the ions. With the recent development of various soft-ionization methods, the ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMMS) has become a powerful method in polymer characterization. In this work, we analyzed polylactide (PLA) by IMMS. PLAs with different stereoregularity were prepared by ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide and LD-lactide monomer. The IMMS analysis showed intriguing difference between PLLA and PLDLA with respect to chain architecture (ring vs. linear) and steroregularity. |
