Novel sulfonated poly(fluorenyl ether sulfone) was prepared by heat-induced crosslinking of the allyl-terminated telechelic sulfone polymers using a bisazide. The new polymer electrolyte, having combined benefits of both the fluorenylbiphenyl unit and the minimized crosslinked network, affords an excellent dimensional stability and a dramatic conductivity enhancement under heated and hydrated conditions. The crosslinked membrane showed outstanding dimensional stability, which was investigated by comparing a swelling ratio of the membrane after treating in heated (80 ºC) water for 24 h. The crosslinked membrane displayed little change (< 1.5%) in thickness and this is far better than its azide-free counterpart (6.9%) and Nafion (18.2%). In addition, we have managed to explain how the terminally crosslinked network produces a dramatic conductivity enhancement at hydrated and heated conditions. |
