Polystyrene (PS) clay nanocomposites were prepared by in situ polymerization in the presence of layered silicate. The initiator system of polymerization was composed of NaBH4, alkyl halide, and surfactant in aqueous media. NaMMT and MMT15A were used as layered silicate. Dispersion of layered silicate with only surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) in aqueous resulted in the expansion of clay gallery height, and the variation of surfactant showed acceleration of clay dispersion in polymerization process. The nanocomposites of PS-clay showed exfoliated structure in XRD and TEM. The thermal property of resulting PS-clay nanocomposites was measured by TGA. |
