Cyanothiophene-based low band-gap polymer for Bulk-Heterojunction Organic Solar Cells |

We synthesized a new cyanothiophene-based D–A copolymer for organic photovoltaic applications. Although the 3-alkoxy-4-cyanothiophene dimer (CT) is a promising acceptor unit, it has not yet been explored in D–A copolymers. We firstly studied the properties of the 3-alkoxy-4-cyanothiophene dimer as an electron acceptor in D–A copolymers. The monomer, 3-alkoxy-4-cyanothiophene dimer, was easily synthesized. The synthesized 3-alkoxy-4-cyanothiophene dimer was copolymerized with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) as an electron donor by using the Stille coupling reaction. The synthesized polymer (PBDT-CT) has a low band-gap (1.73 eV) and a deep HOMO energy level (5.5 eV), which are two important prerequisites of high photovoltaic performance. The synthesis, characterization, and photovoltaic properties of PBDT-CT were thoroughly investigated. |
