Enhanced Performance of Polymer Solar Cells via Surface Plasmon Excitation of Interfacial Au Nanoparticles |

We report the enhanced performance in poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) bulk heterojunction solar cell with interfacial Au nanostructures between buffer layer and indium tin oxide (ITO) surface. To produce localized surface plasmons at the ITO surface, Au nanostructures are fabricated by the layer-by-layer deposition of Au nanorods onto ITO substrates and transformed into nanodots through thermal shape transition. The large enhancement in optical properties of P3HT and power conversion efficiency of photovoltaic devices confirms that exited-state plasmon can undergo a near-field localized interaction with Au nanodots to create the far-field propagating plasmon radiation. Our results suggest that the electromagnetic field associated with the surface plasmons of Au nanostructures is responsible for enhanced exciton generation and charge separation in the bulk heterojunction blend. |
