Preparation of Water-Soluble High Molecular Weight Syndiotactic Poly(vinyl alcohol)/Iodine Complex Film |

Commercial atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (a-PVA)/iodine complex films have high transmittance and degree of polarization (DP) but there has been a serious problem such as iodine desoprtion under humid and warm atmospheres. Syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (s-PVA)/iodine complex film have high DP and durability than that using a-PVA/iodine complex film. In this study, water-soluble high molecular weight s-PVA with number average degree of polymerization of 4000 and syndiotactic diad content of 56% was used to prepare transparent film and then complexed in a iodine/potassium iodine aqueous solution. The transmittance of solution-casted s-PVA film was 88.5%. PVA/iodine complex films were wet-drawn to predetermined draw ratios. The durability of iodine complexs in s-PVA films was higher than those in a-PVA films owing to high water-resistant property of s-PVA and strong interactions between oligo iodide and hydroxyl groups. |
