Hollow titania microcapsules containing titania nanoparticles were successfully prepared by layer-by-layer(LbL) self assembly method. Negatively-charged gelatin/gum arabic microcapsules containing polymeric and titania nanoparticles were used as a template, on which poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) and titanium(Ⅳ) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide (TALH) were alternatively deposited several times through layer-by-layer self assembly. The PEI/TALH multilayer coated capsules were slowly annealed at high temperature for 24 hrs to convert TALH into crystalline titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Hollow titania microspheres in the diameter range from 10 to 30 micrometer were obtained by calcining the coated capsule in air at 450°C for 10h. The morphology, structure, crystal phase of titania spheres were further characterized by scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. |
