Study on electron beam(EB) curing for conventional difunctional bisphenol-A type epoxy resin system containing cationic photoinitiator, triphenylsulfonium hexafluoroantimonate, has been carried out to understand the influence of initiator concentration on the degree of cure and thermal and mechanical properties of EB cured resin system. The initiator concentration was varied in the range of 1-5 parts per hundred of epoxy resin. The degree of cure measured by near infrared spectroscopy(NIR) technique and the glass transition temperature by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) were increased with increasing the concentration of initiator, and showed maximum values at 3 phr initiator concentration. It means that an optimum concentration of initiator for maximum curing (polymerization and crosslinking reaction) is exist. Meanwhile, the values of mechanical properties including flexural and impact characteristics of EB cured resin system were lower than those of thermally cured resin system. This observation is believed to be due to the internal stress formed more in EB cured epoxy network by more rapid cooling after curing.
