Fabrication of Water-Repellent Elastomeric nanocomposites |

Water repellency of elastomeric materials is of great significance for electronic devices and corrosion protection. In general, the wettability of a solid surface is determined by the surface tension and the roughness of surface. Hierarchical structures with both micro- and nanometer-scale structures may provide extremely hydrophobic properties. Here we present a simple process for water repellent thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) nanocomposites prepared by self-organization of aqueous droplets and following thermal treatment. The homogeneous dispersion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in TPE matrix was achieved by the noncovalent functionalization of CNTs. The water contact angles (CA) were used to characterize hydrophobicity with/without porous organization of composite films. We investigated mechanical properties and the change of pore size depending on various MWNTs concentration and thermal treatment for potential uses in industrial application. |
