The preparation, characterization and applications of various block copolymers consisting synthetic polymers and polypeptides as individual components are to be described. Synthetic copolymers including polystyrene, poly(tert-butyl acrylate), poly(methyl methacrylate), etc. are synthesized by controlled radical polymerizations like atom transfer radical polymerization, nitroxide mediated free radical polymerization (NMFRP), etc. Polymer-block-polypeptides are synthesized by the ring opening polymerization of α-amino acid-N-carboxyanhydrides. The amino acid selected for this study is mainly glutamic acid and cysteine. Self assembling behavior of these amphiphilic block copolymers were evaluated by dissolving them in a selective solvent mixture. Stable micelles with spherical shape and well-defined dispersity are formed and these supramolecular structures are characterized by SEM, TEM, NMR, LLS, particle size analyzer, viscometric analysis etc. |
