Effects of physical and chemical treatments on the thermo-mechanical properties of illite/epoxy nanocomposites |

Hybrid organic-inorganic composites have the combination of the mechanical toughness and flexibility of the organic component and the hardness and thermal stability of the inorganic component. Illite is one of the main clay materials on earth, consisting 50% of clay materials on earth. It is a layered clay material with the repetition of tetrahedron-octahedron-tetrahedron 2:1 layers with good thermal stability and high aspect ratio and it can be used as an inorganic filler. However, there are not many studies about illite-polymer composites. Therefore, in this study, the use of illite as an inorganic filler in epoxy matrix was investigated by modifying illite physically and chemically to solve general mixing issue of clay/polymer composites. And the effects of the modification on the thermo-mechanical properties of the prepared composites were studied. |
