Recent Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery fault has prompted a lot of attention on safety issues of lithium-ion batteries. One of the causes of battery ignition is the mechanical/thermal instability of separator, which can be resolved by developing composite polymer electrolytes. Key requisites for composite polymer electrolytes towards practically viable battery components are high ionic conductivity and high mechanical integrity. Herein we investigate new composite polymer electrolytes based on succinonitrile as plastic crystal electrolyte and nitrile-functionalized silica nanoparticles as inorganic filler. Nitrile groups on the surfaces of silica nanoparticles were found to be effectively interacting with lithium ion, thereby improving salt dissociation degree and ionic conductivity. The batteries based on new composite electrolytes have demonstrated excellent electrochemical/thermal stability, long-term cycle performance with lithium metal oxide cathode materials, and rate capability. |
