Synthesis of TiO2-Biocidal Polymer Nanocomposites and their Synergistic Antibacterial Performances |

TiO2/poly[2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate] core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized by surface-initiated photo-polymerization using TiO2 nanoparticles as an initiator. The TiO2/biocidal polymer nanoparticles had enhanced antibacterial capabilities compared to the pristine TiO2 nanoparticles under UV-light irradiation against both Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus. Moreover, the TiO2/biocidal polymer nanoparticles exhibited high antimicrobial efficiency even in the dark condition due to the antibacterial polymer shell. The biocidal polymer shell and UV light-driven anti-infective TiO2 core synergistically attribute to the enhanced antibacterial effect. |
