The polymer solar cells fabricated by solution processes such as spin coating have many advantages with low cost, large-area fabrication, etc. Thieno[3,4-b]thiophene-based conjugated polymers seem to be advantageous with respect to low band gaps even though the synthetic procedures are somewhat complicated. We attempted to synthesize a thieno[3,4-b]thiophene-based alternating copolymer via Suzuki coupling reaction for application in the polymer-based solar cells. The structure and properties of the polymer were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, GPC, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, cyclic voltametry, UV-vis spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Energy levels of the HOMO and LUMO of the polymer were also estimated. The polymer blends with PCBM were employed in fabrication of bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic devices. The experimental results will be presented in detail. |
