A photochromic liquid crystalline polymer {4-butoxy-2’-(4-hex-5-enyloxy)-4’-(4-hex-5-enyl-oxybenzyloxy)azobenzene, abbreviated as PNLCP} was newly synthesized via acrylic diene metathesis polymerization. Utilizing the combined techniques of DSC, cross-polarized optical microscopy, and WAXD, it was realized that PNLCP formed a nematic (N) phase below the isotropization temperature and a glass N phase below glass transition temperature. Especially, 2D WAXD result indicated that N phase contains smectic C (SmC)-type cybotactic clusters, which should be related with the chemical structure of PNLCP. Without introducing any chemical crosslinks, PNLCP fibers and films were reversibly deformed by exposing UV and IR lights. When a polarized UV light was used, PNLCP was deformed to a programmed direction. Because of the wireless remote-controlled 3D actuating behaviors of PNLCP combined with its excellent processibility, PNLCP can be applied in optoelectronic and bio-mimetic devices. |
