In this study, we investigated the interfacial strength between surface modified polystyrene and polyamide nylon 6. we use the three different processes for the polymer(polystyrene) surface modification; 1) low energy Ar+ ion beam irradiation under reactive o2 gas, 2) oxygen plasma only, 3) oxygen plasma treatment after Ar+ ion beam irradiation. In the fracture toughness measurement using ADCB test, the toughness increased with the increase of bonding time at a constant annealing temperature, reached the saturation value, then decreased. The similar behavior was shown at a constant bonding time. The initial increase of toughness can be explained by the increase of adhesive strength at the interface. As bonding time is getting longer, further reaction is restricted and the micro-separation at the interface due to the chain diffusion lead to less co-entanglement between polymer chains. It decreases cohesive strength. Therefore, the optimum annealing temperature or bonding time existed. |
