제목 Vertical alignment of liquid crystals using surface-anchored layer of amphiphilic block copolymers
초록 We proposed alignment method using amphiphilic block copolymer having high affinity with indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. Proposed method uses a simple method of mixing amphiphilic block copolymer in the liquid crystals (LCs). Amphiphilic block copolymer includes hydrophobic poly(ethylene) (PE) part and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) part. The hydrophilic part of the amphiphilic block copolymer is directed toward the ITO substrate, and the hydrophobic part of that is toward the bulk LCs. Thus, the surface-anchored layer formed by self-assembly is able to align the LCs vertically. We examined the vertical alignment properties in accordance with the PEG contents and the concentration of the amphiphilic block copolymers.
