Core cross-linked star (CCS) polymers are comprised of multiple polymer arms radiating from a densely cross-linked core. CCS polymers containing both hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer arms are expected to behave as effective emulsifiers by combining advantages of the CCS architecture with amphiphilicity. To this end, we exploited alternating copolymerization of 1,2-bis(maleimidoethane) (BMI) and styrene (S) via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process for synthesis of the target amphiphilic heteroarm CCS polymers copolymerization. Based on this “in-out” approach recently reported by our group, we discuss synthesis and self-assembly behavior of amphiphilic heteroarm CCS polymers including their emulsification ability for water/oil mixtures. |
