Activated carbons were prepared from Korean and Mongolian anthracites using chemical activation with potassium hydroxide and used as carbon materials for electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) electrodes. To increase the carbon content in the original anthracites prior to activation, ash components, mainly silica dioxide, were removed by extraction using hydro fluoric acid. The activated carbons prepared from Mongolian anthracites have higher BET surface area and narrower pore size distribution than that from Korean one since they have much higher carbon contents. Comparing with other activated carbons reported in several literatures, the activated carbons prepared from anthracites have a bit lower electrical capacity but show very good stability even for long-term charge/discharge experiments. From characterization and experimental results, it was proven that the activated carbons made from anthracites could be promising carbon materials for EDLC electrodes. |
