Forward osmosis (FO) membrane processes have nowadays attracted many interests in water reuse applications due to its simplicity and low energy consumption. Although many semipermeable membranes such as RO or NF membranes can be used in FO processes, the osmotically driven water transport in through the membranes is much slower than theoretical value due to the concentration polarization effect in the polymeric support layer. Here, the porous support layers using carboxylated polymers and their polyamide TFC FO membranes were prepared to reduce the concentration polarization effect by enhancing the water transport and salt passage in the polymeric support layer. The structural analysis on the polymeric support layers prepared from various conditions was performed to find the optimal structure for FO membranes. Furthermore, the relationship between membrane material, structure and the transport properties of water and draw solute were comprehensively studied. |
