A photo-initiation process was investigated for the development of its rapid and well-controlled RAFT polymerization of vinyl acetate using methyl(ethoxycarbonothioyl)sulfanyl acetate (MESA) and bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phenylphosphine oxide as a RAFT agent and a photo-initiator, respectively. MESA was selected as a photo-chemically inert RAFT agent to minimize the photolysis of thiocarbonylthio groups during polymerization. Well-controlled poly(vinyl acetate) with pre-specified molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution was successfully synthesized. The polymerization was of living characters, and remarkably rapid compared to the one using thermal initiation process with showing very short induction period. Detailed kinetic studies on the mechanism of the polymerization will be discussed. |
