Decomposition of acetaldehyde using a combined system of photocatalyst with corona discharge |

TiO2 based photocatalysts activated by UV- light and Corona discharge are two usefuland practical technologies in decomposition of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs). In order to obtain higher decomposition efficiency of VOCs, a novel reactor system was designed combining photocatalyst with corona discharge hardware. Decomposition reaction of acetaldehyde was carried out using photocatalyst or corona discharge system alone and also using their combination, respectively under varying set of operating conditions. Concentration of acetaldehyde in the reactor was measured by gas chromatography equipped with an automatic gas sampling valve. It was shown that the photocatalyst only system is more effective than the combining reactor with corona discharge under low concentration condition of acetaldehyde (1000 ppm). However, removal efficiency under high concentration condition (4000 ppm) was opposit to what was shown under low concentration of acetaldehyde. These unexpected results could be explained by considering the role of ozone originated from the corona discharge interacting with UV light directed to the photocatalyst under different acetaldehyde concentration.
