Activated carbons, which are also known as porous carbons, have been widely used in separation, purification and catalytic processes. Elemental mercury in fumes of coal plants can lead severe environmental problems, and it should be removed before emission. In this work, activated carbons were treated by acid and base solutions in order to introduce surface functional groups on carbon surfaces for mercury removal. It was found that base-treated activated carbons showed high removal efficiency than that of acid-treated activated carbons. |
