제목 | Overview of CCS Research, Development and Demonstration in Canada |
초록 | Last year in Hokkaido, Japan, G8 leaders committed to supporting an objective to launch 20 large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstrations globally by 2010. This action was identified as a crucial element for the world to address the climate change challenge. Canada, with its world-class geological storage potential for CO2, is doing its part to contribute to this G8 commitment, and has been doing so since the beginning of the CCS concept. The Weyburn-Midale project in Saskatchewan one of the first large-scale efforts in the world was launched in 2000. This project involves capturing CO2 emissions in North Dakota, transporting the CO2 across the CanadaUS border and delivering it for enhanced oil recovery operations.The Weyburn-Midale site also serves as the location for the IEA Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project one of the largest international CO2 measuring, monitoring and verification projects in the world.This research project was launched before CO2 injection began and will be concluded in 2011.The presentation will review the key features of the research being performed and some of the results being obtained. In addition to their contributions to the IEA Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project, Canadian federal and provincial governments have committed more than $3 billion (CAD) to CCS initiatives over the last two years, which could lead to 5-7 large-scale demonstration projects in Canada.This funding also includes 9 CCS projects that will demonstrate how CCS can reduce emissions associated with fertilizer production, gas processing, coal-fired electricity generation and, eventually, oil sands operations. These projects will be reviewed and described in brief in the presentation. Included in the list of large-scale CCS demonstration projects will be the Boundary Dam power station in Saskatchewan. This project, in which the Government of Canada made a $240-million (CAD) investment, is one of the world’s first and largest full-scale CCS demonstrations at a coal-fired electricity plant. Canada has several universities and research institutes that have been involved in CCS research and development for many years.The presentation will highlight the work of some of the larger centres. Canada is also working with the United States and Mexico to develop a North American Carbon Storage Atlas of all major CO2 sources and sinks. Key aspects of this project will be described. The presentation will conclude with highlighting Canada’s active involvement in many international CCS organizations. |
