Pyridine-alkoxide ligands based neutral nickel complexes for the oligomerization of ethylene |

A series of pyridine-alkoxide ligands were synthesized from phenyl pyridine through a halogen free electrophilic substitution reaction. This involves a lithium aggregate superbase which was used for the halogen free α-substitution of pyridyl ring to end up with the required Ph-pyCAr2OH pyridine-alcohol ligands. This selective pyridine ring lithiation of 2-phenylpyridine, α to nitrogen, opens a straight forward access to synthesize their metalated derivatives using (PPh3)2Ni(Ph)Br as the metalating agent. The hydroxyl groups of these ligands were activated by treating them with sodium hydride and converting them into sodium salt. Further reaction with (PPh3)2Ni(Ph)Br give the desired metal complex catalysts. These complexes were found highly active towards ethylene in normal and higher ethylene pressure conditions giving oligomers. Butenes and hexenes were found as the major component in the oligomer. |
