Reinforcing Effect of Amine-Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube (AF-MWNT) and Vapor Grown Carbon Nanofiber (AF-VGCNF)/Epoxy Nanocomposites |

There were problems in carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/polymer nanocomposites that were both issues such as dispersion CNTs and interfacial adhesion between CNTs and matrix. This paper explored the functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs, diameter: 10-20 nm, length: 10-50㎛) and vapor grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs, diameter: 60-100 nm, length: 30-100㎛) with aminobenzoyl moiety. Thus, the MWNTs and VGCNFs were first functionalized with 4-aminobenzoic acid using “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation in polyphosphoric acid/phosphorous pentoxide to afford aminobenzoyl-functionalized MWNTs (AF-MWNTs) and VGCNFs (AF-VGCNFs), respectively. They were as a conductive filler as well as co-curing agent to epoxy resin. Samples were studied on the thermal, mechanical and electrical properties of the nanocomposites as a function of AF-MWNT or AF-VGCNF loads. |
