Silicone hydrogel contact lens has three-layer structure consisted of a lens core and two hydrophilic surface layers. The core parts are siloxane-based polymers, rather than water, for oxygen transport through the bulk of the lenses. The two surface layers are composed of hydrophylic polymers to promote wearability. High water content of the surface layers is an important feature to prevent dry eye symptoms. In this report, a copolymer [poly(HEA-co-GMA)] polymerized from glucamine-containing methacrylate (GMA) and hydroxy ethyl acrylate (HEA) was applied to the surface layer. Silicone hydrogel contact lenses were exposed to O2 plasma to form peroxide groups. The plasma-treated lenses were added to an aqueous solution of HEA and GMA, and then heated to produce radicals on the surfaces of the lenses. Radical polymerization of HEA and GMA was occurred on the surfaces of the lenses. The surface layer, poly(HEA-co-GMA), showed high water content over 80%. |
