Highly Aligned Ultra-High Density Array of Conducting Polymer Nanowires using Block Copolymer Templates |

High density arrays of conducting polymer nanowires have attracted much attention, due to their potential applications as electrochromic devices, organic photovoltaic devices, and nano-actuators. Here, we show the preparation of ultrahigh density arrays of nanowires of a conducting polymer, polypyrrole (PPy), on ITO-coated glass in a nanoporous template, prepared from a block copolymer of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA), by electropolymerization within the template. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) shows that the main chains of PPy are highly aligned along the nanowire direction. Also, the conductivity of a single PPy nanowire measured using current-sensing atomic force microscopy (CS-AFM) was much higher than that of continuous PPy film. This high conductivity of nanowires is due to the high degree of chain orientation, even though they are amorphous and have a small separation distance of 0.36 nm for two neighboring PPy main chains. |
