Fabrication of unidirectional porous Si2N2O-Si3N4 composite using a viscous polymeric slurry of methylcellulose |

Unidirectional porous Si2N2O-Si3N4 composites were fabricated using a novel process which employed ethanol bubble as a pore forming agent in a viscous slurry of methylcellulose. The slurry contained Si powders, Y2O3, Al2O3, methylcellulose, ethanol and distill water. During the heating of the slurry, bubbles were formed at 70-80°C and produced the unidirectional porous green body. After nitridatiion at 1400°C, Si2N2O whisker formed at the pore surface in the Si3N4 matrix. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the formation of Si2N2O whisker. Pore morphology, size, and distribution of the pores were characterized using scanning electron microscope and mercury porosimetry. |
