A polymerized ionic liquid (PIL) carries an ionic liquid (IL) species in each of the repeating units. The major advantages of using a PIL instead of an IL are the enhanced mechanical stability, durability, etc. So in this study, PIL microspheres were prepared using a Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification. With the SPG membrane, monomer droplets containing IL monomer and an 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator were prepared in an oil phase using a membrane emulsification technique. On the other hand, the aqueous phase contained hydroquinone (HQ) as an inhibitor and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizer. By applying pressure, an oil phase permeated through the membrane into the aqueous phase to form uniform monomer droplets. Then, by elevating the temperature, polymerization proceeds inside the droplets to form the uniform polymer particles. Through this study, the PIL particles were expected powerful binders and dispersants for coatings. |
