In recent years, many studies have been reported to amplify intracellular oxidative stress for cancer-specific therapy. Compared to normal cells, cancer cells are known for elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Therefore, the modulation of the ROS level in cancer cells has been a research target of great interest for cancer treatment. Herein, we describe a biomineral-based oxidative stress amplifying nanoparticle that can effectively kill the cancer cells through the Fenton-like reaction. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) doped with the catalytic metal elements that can induce the Fenton-like reaction was fabricated through an aqueous one-pot in situ process. Within cancer cells, this nanoparticle can amplify oxidative stress by elevation of the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) level and the following Fenton-like reaction which generates hydroxyl radicals (·OH), one of the highly toxic ROS. This inorganic nano-Fenton reactor may find various applications in ROS-modulating cancer therapy. |
