Vinyltrimethylsilane (VTMS) was polymerized in the presence of polycarbonate (PC) by ultrasonic irradiation-initiated polymerization of VTMS. It was previously found that sonochemical polymerization of pure VTMS yielded transparent and elastic polymer, which was due to the crosslinking reaction between silane units. Thus, when VTMS was polymerized within PC phase, it was expected that poly(VTMS) (PVTMS) may act as an impact modifier for the matrix. The adequate level of adhesion was promoted by in-situ formation of the PC-PVTMS copolymer as confirmed by FTIR analysis of the reaction products after a proper extraction of ungrafted ingredients from the reaction mixture. In order to verify the effectiveness of the PVTMS as a toughening agent, notch sensitivity was evaluated for pure PC and PVTMS-modified PC. The effect of PVTMS on the dynamic mechanical properties and rheological behavior of PC are discussed. |
