Conformational study on MNG-3 at the Air/Aqueous Interface |

Two dimensional characteristics of MNG-3(Maltose-neopently glycol-3) at the air-water/aqueous interface, on Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) films and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films were investigated by using surface pressure area isotherm, Brewster angle microscope (BAM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray reflectivity (XRR). Surface pressure area isotherms show that MNG-3 has different limiting area according to existence and concentration of carbonate ions in the subphase. BAM images demonstrate that more packed and bigger domains are formed with higher pressure and higher concentration of carbonate ions. AFM images also show its close-packed arrangement with higher concentration of carbonate ions and higher height with more pressure. This different behavior is originated from hydrogen bonding between hydroxyl groups (maltose part) of MNG-3 and carbonate ions which intrude between MNG-3 molecules. |
