In Situ Reactive Compatibilization for Enhanced Adhesion between Polypropylene and Nylon 6 |

We present an investigation of the interfacial reinforcement between polypropylene (PP) and nylon 6 (Ny6) by in situ reactive compatibilization. A certain amount of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was preblended with pure PP to form a copolymer in situ with Ny6. Fracture toughness was measured using an asymmetric double cantilever beam test (ADCB). Analysis on the locus of failure revealed that the fracture toughness between PP and Ny6 was influenced not only by the bonding temperature but also by the bonding time at constant bonding temperature. The fracture toughness was increased with the annealing time; then, it reached a plateau value. The fracture toughness increased with the bonding temperature until 220 0C , then decreased at higher bonding temperature. We ascribed the appearance of the maximum in fracture toughness to progressive occurrence of two different failure mechanisms. The dependence of the fracture toughness on the bonding time was also explained in terms of two fracture mechanisms, adhesive failure and cohesive failure. |
