Volatile fatty acids(VFAs) were produced from marine macro-algal biomass by anaerobic digestion using complx microorganisms. The influenece of pH control, methanogen inhibitor, sludge inoculums size, substrate concentration, nutrient supplement, and pretreatment on the VFA production was investigated. The acids produced in the anaerobic fermentation were mainly acetic, propionic, and butyric acid. The VFAs concentration of 10.0g/L was produced with a yield of 50% in 4days of fermentation time. A maximum yield of 60% was obtained at the optimum conditions in the scope of this study. Further optimization of sludge inoculums size, substrate concentration, nutrient supplement, and pretreatment conditions should enhance the VFAs productivity. |
