Process for isomerizing 5-vinyl-2-norbornene in the presence of a basic catalytic system |

The 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB), the third component for ethylene-propylene rubber, was obtained by the isomerization of 5-vinyl-2-norbornene (VNB) in the presence of a basic catalystic system consisting of an alkali metal hydride (MH) and a polyamine. The activity of the alkali metal hydride increased in the order of K>Na>Li. The structure of the polyamine also affects the isomerization reaction. Aliphatic 1,2-diamines such as ethylenediamine (EDA) produced ENB in high yields at room temperature, while monoamines, aromatic diamines and aliphatic diamines (1,3-and 1,4-diamines) were inert to the isomerization. The activity of the catalytic system was strongly related to the color of the solution. The purple active species showed a strong absorption band at=581nm in UV-VIS spectrum. A series of EPR experiments suggests that the isomerization of VNB proceeds through a radical mechanism. |
