A Study on Fabrication and Mechanical Properties of AZ31 Mg Alloy Foam |

Metal foam is a class of attractive materials. AZ31 Mg alloy foams with uniform pore structures were successfully fabricated using Al powder and metal granular Ca as thickening agent via Melt foaming method in this study. The results show that: adding 1.5wt.% contents of thickening agent to magnesium melt at 680℃ ~ 740℃, mixing for 10min at 450rpm; adding 2.0wt.% contents of blowing agent to magnesium melt at 680℃~760℃, mixing for 40sec at 1000rpm; If when holding the molten for 30sec and room cooling, magnesium foams alloy with small well structure, porosity within 35.0~48.0 % and average pore size within 0.04~0.05cm could be fabricated. If when holding the molten for 2min and room cooling, magnesium foams alloy with well structure, porosity within 63.5~72.0 % and average pore size within 0.10~0.16cm could be fabricated. The result shows that compression curve of magnesium foam including initial linear elastic region, plateau region and densification region; with the increase of porosity and pore size in the samples, location of compression curve, plateau stress value and energy absorption capacity were decreased, while the densification strain value was increased. |
