Recently, the field of flame retardancy has been gradually changing along with a study using eco-friendly flame retardants. In this study fire protection was carried out by cationic startch (CS) and sodium montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay multilayers on polyurethane (PU) foam using layer-by-layer (LBL) method. Only 5 bilayers (BL) coating showed good thermal stability and flame retardancy by measuring heat release rate, thermogravimetric analysis, and cone calorimeter test. To measure the combustion time, the flame test was performed using CS/MMT LbL-coated PU samples. As a result of combustion, it was confirmed that the carbonized layer was formed at the initial stage of combustion and there were many unburned portions. Also, the heat releases rate was reduced compared to the control sample. Along this result, CS/MMT multilayers can be one of the effective methods to enhance the flame retardancy of polymeric foams. |
