Inorganic materials having both mesopores and macropores should be very attractive for their applications in the area of adsorption, catalysis and separation due to their obvious advantages, i.e. high surface area of mesoporous structures and ease access to active sites of macroporous structures. Such silicate materials with bimodal pore size distribution have been synthesized by replicating the close-packed array of colloidal crystal and liquid crystal mesophase of surfactant. A new and simpler method for preparation of macrostructured mesoporous silicate was prepared in our group. Monodispersed micron-sized polystyrene beads were directly added to a gel solution for synthesis of mesoporous MCM-41 without any pre-arrangement of PS beads. Different macropore structures can be formed due to shrinking mode of macropores. The first one termed skeletal structure (SkS) consists of network like structure partially filling the interstices of PS bead. When the PS bead size became lager, the wall of SkS became thicker and its structure was changed. These biporous silicate powders were used for toluene adsorption and catalytic NO reduction, and their potential as new materials were tested. |
