pH sensitive materials attract scientific interest due to their potential applications in sensors and delivery system. In this study, a new bolaamphiphilic molecule was synthesized which contains double bond in carbon backbone and glycylglycines at both ends. This new molecule self-assembles in aqueous solution and its structural conformation changes with pH. At the acidic condition lower than pH 4, this molecule self-assembles to form nanovesicles. The nanovesicles transform to microtubes at neutral and basic conditions over pH 6. This structural transition is reproduced easily. Exploiting the morphological transformation, encapsulation and releasement of a specific substance was examined; a fluorescence dye of 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid (ANS) encapsulated in the microrod was released by lowering pH. These results demonstrated that the self-assembly of this new bolaamphiphilic molecule is a good host material for biological/chemical sensors and drug delivery system. |
