Stabilization of electrically-induced dipole alignment is one of important criteria in the developments of nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers. In this work we prepared novel polyimides containing 1-(2,4-dioxyethoxy)phenyl)-2-{5-(2,2,3-tricyanovinyl)-2-thiophenyl)}ethenyl groups as NLO-chromophores. We selected the latter because they have large dipole moment. Furthermore, 1-(2,4-dioxyethoxy)phenyl)-2-{5-(2,2,3-tricyanovinyl)-2-thiophenyl)}ethenylgroups constitute novel Y-type NLO polyimides, and these Y-type NLO polyimides have not yet been presented in the literature. These mid-type NLO polymers are expected to have both the merits of main-chain and side chain-NLO polymers: stabilization of dipole alignment and good solubility. After confirming the structure of the resulting polymers, we will investigated their properties such as solubility, thermal stability, surface morphology of polymer films, second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, and relaxation of dipole alignment. |
