Carbon dots are ultra-small particles below 10 nm in size, which exhibit interesting optoelectronic properties due to the quantum confinement and surface edge effects. They are non-toxic and easily dispersible in many solvents in comparison to semi-conductor quantum dots. Here, we report the synthesis of water-soluble carbon dots from a carbon precursor with large conjugated aromatic structures containing many hydroxyl groups. Two facile synthesis methods, namely, hydrothermal and microwave are adopted for the synthesis of carbon dots and the reaction time and temperature are optimized. A detailed study on the structural, morphological and optical characteristics will be presented. |
